Here is the Science you are expected to know

In the ACT Science section, the 40-45 questions are based on scientific passages. Here’s a breakdown of the question types and content areas typically covered:

  1. Data Representation:
    • Approximately 15-20 questions
    • These questions involve interpreting data presented in graphs, tables, charts, and diagrams.
  2. Research Summaries:
    • Approximately 15-20 questions
    • These questions require understanding and analyzing scientific experiments, studies, or research summaries.
  3. Conflicting Viewpoints:
    • Approximately 5-10 questions
    • These questions assess your ability to compare and evaluate different scientific viewpoints or hypotheses.

ACT Science expects you to have a certain level of knowledge in science, and it is information you have already learned, but probably forgot.

Tips for Taking the ACT Science

  • The answer is there: Understand the question and find the answer within the passage, chart, or table.
  • Trust the question: If the question says “According to Table 2,” then the answer is there.
  • Mark up the booklet: As you read, underline, circle, cross out, any information that seems like it could be an answer. Include the drawings. Information will be obvious as to lead to the answer.
  • Be flexible: Quickly scan the charts and drawings to see if it seems overwhelming to tackle at the moment. Skip around and do the easiest ones first.
  • Reading is the primary skill: Be sure you practice reading everyday to overcome being caught by the time clock.
