There are only 10 rules to memorize. The ACT stays within these rules, so know them.
Keys to memorizing the rules:
1. Chunking and Grouping
- Divide the rules into manageable groups. For instance, group rules about verb tense, pronouns, and prepositions separately. This makes them easier to digest and recall.
- Create summaries or infographics for each group that capture the essential points in a visually appealing way.
2. Use of Mnemonics
- Create memorable phrases or acronyms. For instance, for comma rules, you might use “FANBOYS” to remember conjunctions that require commas before them.
- For verb forms, create a mnemonic like “Be Was, Have Been” to quickly recall the forms of “to be” and “to have”.
3. Active Application in Writing
- Write sentences applying each rule. Challenge yourself to write a short paragraph where you intentionally use each grammar rule correctly.
- Regularly write essays or journal entries focusing on applying one rule at a time.
4. Flashcards
- Create flashcards with the rule on one side and an example or correction on the other. Use both digital tools like Anki or Quizlet and physical flashcards.
- Regularly shuffle and review these flashcards to reinforce memory through active recall.
5. Scheduled Revisions
- Plan specific times for grammar reviews in your study schedule. Use these sessions to go over the rules, write using them, and test yourself with flashcards.
- Employ spaced repetition, reviewing the material at increasing intervals.
6. Peer Teaching and Discussion
- Explain the rules to someone else. Teaching is a powerful tool for reinforcing your own understanding.
- Organize or join study groups where each participant can teach a rule to the group.
7. Real-World Practice
- Edit text for grammar. Take an article or a piece of writing and edit it specifically looking for errors related to the ACT rules.
- Utilize grammar correction tools initially, then try to do it without any help, using only your knowledge of the rules.
8. Simulated Testing
- Practice with ACT-style questions that are focused solely on these rules. Online resources and test prep books often have sections dedicated to specific grammar points.
- Take timed mini-tests focusing only on these grammar issues to simulate the pressure and format of the actual ACT.
9. Visualization and Association
- Visualize the rules in context. When you read or hear something, mentally note examples of the grammar rules being used correctly or incorrectly.
- Associate each rule with specific colors, symbols, or images to enhance memory through visual cues.
10. Feedback and Correction: Be Your Own Grammarly
- Act like Grammarly. As you write or review texts, take on the role of an automated grammar checker. Scrutinize each sentence for the application of the grammar rules you’ve memorized.
- Encourage a mindset of constant vigilance for grammar mistakes, just as Grammarly would flag issues in real-time.
- Correct mistakes immediately to reinforce the correct usage of the rules. This active correction process is crucial in building strong grammatical skills.
