ACT MATH

  1. Math Section:
    • 60 questions in 60 minutes
    • About 1 minute per question

In the ACT Math section, the 60 questions are broken down into various content areas. Here’s a general breakdown of the question distribution:

  1. Pre-Algebra/Elementary Algebra:
    • Approximately 14-16 questions
    • Topics may include operations with integers, fractions, decimals, exponents, square roots, and basic algebraic expressions.
  2. Intermediate Algebra/Coordinate Geometry:
    • Approximately 10-12 questions
    • Topics may include solving equations and inequalities, quadratic equations, graphing linear equations and inequalities, and working with functions.
  3. Plane Geometry:
    • Approximately 9-11 questions
    • Topics may include properties of geometric figures, angles, triangles, circles, and area/perimeter calculations.
  4. Trigonometry:
    • Approximately 5-7 questions
    • Topics may include trigonometric ratios, trigonometric functions, and solving trigonometric equations.
  5. Pre-Calculus/Elementary Functions:
    • Approximately 7-9 questions
    • Topics may include properties and graphs of functions, logarithms, exponentials, and complex numbers.
  6. Miscellaneous:
    • Approximately 9-11 questions
    • These questions may cover topics from probability, statistics, series and sequences, combinations and permutations, and other miscellaneous math concepts.

The Math section of the ACT assesses a wide range of mathematical skills and concepts, so students should practice problems from each content area to ensure readiness for the test.

Instructions for Memorizing:

  1. Segmented Learning:
    • Break down the content into smaller sections (e.g., 10 formulas/concepts at a time). This helps manage the cognitive load and allows for focused study sessions.
  2. Use Flashcards:
    • Create flashcards using simple index cards.
    • Start by making a set of 10 flashcards. Focus on studying and memorizing these cards thoroughly. Once you feel comfortable with the first set, create another set of 10 new cards. As you study the new set, keep revising the previous set to reinforce your memory.
    • Continue this process, adding and revising in increments of 10, until you have memorized all 100 concepts and formulas. This step-by-step approach helps build your knowledge gradually while ensuring that earlier learned material is consistently reviewed and retained.
  3. Daily Review Sessions:
    • Dedicate specific times each day to review the formulas. Repetition is key in moving information from short-term to long-term memory.
  4. Teach What You Learn:
    • Explain the concepts and formulas to someone else. Teaching is a powerful method to deepen your understanding and retention.
  5. Practice with Problems:
    • Apply the formulas to actual ACT practice questions. This not only tests your memory but also your ability to use the formulas in context.
  6. Visual Aids:
    • Use diagrams and charts to visualize relationships and geometric properties. Visual learning can be very helpful, especially for geometric concepts.
  7. Regular Testing:
    • Set up periodic self-tests to evaluate what you’ve retained and what needs more review. This can guide your study sessions more effectively.
